Title: Israel Opens Aid Route to Gaza Under Global Pressure—UN Struggles to Deliver Supplies

In a rare shift amid intensifying international pressure, the Israeli government on Tuesday, May 20, authorized the entry of 93 aid trucks into Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing—marking the most substantial aid delivery since early March when severe restrictions were imposed.
The trucks, coordinated by the United Nations, carried life-saving essentials such as flour, baby formula, medical supplies, and pharmaceuticals. The move came after weeks of appeals from international organizations and key world powers demanding urgent humanitarian access to the besieged enclave.
Dire Humanitarian Crisis
Despite the breakthrough, the aid remains undelivered within Gaza as of Tuesday evening. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric confirmed that UN personnel on the ground have not yet received clearance to distribute the supplies to warehouses or civilians.
“The trucks are in, but the aid is not reaching the people,” Dujarric said. “We need safe and unrestricted access to ensure that this critical assistance gets to those who need it most.”
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached unprecedented levels. The UN has issued a stark warning: over 14,000 newborns are at immediate risk of death due to the lack of food, water, and medical resources. The region’s hospitals remain overwhelmed and under-equipped, with international health organizations calling the situation “catastrophic.”
Mounting International Pressure
The development follows a wave of diplomatic pressure. The United Kingdom recently suspended trade negotiations with Israel and imposed sanctions on specific sectors in the West Bank, citing ongoing humanitarian concerns. The European Union has echoed similar sentiments, urging Israel to uphold its international obligations and facilitate aid access without delay.
Though Israeli officials have stated they plan to allow dozens of aid trucks into Gaza daily, UN officials have warned that the current volume falls drastically short of what is required to prevent further loss of life.
A Fragile Opening
While the reopening of the Kerem Shalom crossing offers a glimmer of hope, it also highlights the fragile and complex dynamics of delivering aid in conflict zones. The delay in distributing supplies underscores the bureaucratic and political hurdles that continue to obstruct humanitarian operations.
This limited aid delivery may be a turning point—but without consistent and scaled-up access, it will not be enough to reverse the deteriorating conditions in Gaza.
