Dublin, Ireland – Telecoms provider Three Ireland has revealed that it has blocked more than 8 million scam calls targeting its customers in just the past eight months, in a sweeping campaign to curb fraud and protect consumers across the country.
The company says the move is part of a broader strategy to combat the rising tide of phone-based scams, including impersonation attempts, phishing attacks, and caller ID spoofing—fraudulent tactics that have plagued Irish mobile users in recent years.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Three Ireland confirmed that it had deployed advanced call monitoring and AI-driven filtering technologies to detect and stop fraudulent activity before it reaches customers’ devices. The system identifies suspicious patterns based on call volume, origin, and behavior, allowing it to automatically block high-risk numbers in real time.
“Scam calls are not just an inconvenience—they pose a serious threat to public trust and financial security,” said Eóin MacCarthy, Head of Network Operations at Three Ireland. “We’re committed to doing everything in our power to ensure our customers feel safe when answering their phones.”
A Growing Threat
The move comes amid a surge in scam attempts across Ireland and Europe, many of which involve fraudsters pretending to be from banks, government agencies, or utility providers. These calls often pressure victims into revealing personal information or making urgent payments under false pretenses.
According to data from the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg), reports of scam calls in Ireland have increased significantly in the past three years, with thousands of complaints logged by mobile users every month.
Public Education & Collaboration
Three Ireland also emphasized the importance of consumer awareness, noting that it regularly provides customers with guidance on how to recognize and respond to suspicious calls. The provider is collaborating with industry peers and regulatory bodies to share intelligence and bolster nationwide defenses.
“Technology alone isn’t enough,” MacCarthy added. “We need an informed public and a united industry approach to stop scammers in their tracks.”
