Washington, D.C. – Two staff members of the Israeli Embassy were fatally shot on Wednesday evening outside the Capital Jewish Museum in downtown Washington, D.C. The victims, a young couple reportedly planning to become engaged, were leaving a diplomatic event hosted by the American Jewish Committee when the attack occurred.
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez from Chicago, allegedly approached a group of four individuals near the museum and opened fire, killing the two embassy staff at close range. After the shooting, Rodriguez entered the museum and was apprehended by event security. While in custody, he reportedly chanted "Free, free Palestine."
Authorities have confirmed that Rodriguez acted alone and had no prior interactions with law enforcement. The incident is being investigated as a potential hate crime. D.C. Police Chief Pamela A. Smith stated that the suspect was not on any security watchlists and that there were no heightened security threats prior to the shooting.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog condemned the attack, expressing solidarity with the victims' families and the Jewish community. Former U.S. President Donald Trump also denounced the violence, emphasizing the need to eliminate hatred and radicalism in the United States. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem pledged justice for the victims, and FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
The Israeli Embassy in Washington has expressed full confidence in U.S. law enforcement authorities to apprehend the perpetrator and ensure the safety of Israeli representatives and Jewish communities throughout the United States.
This tragic incident has heightened concerns over increasing antisemitic violence and its implications for Jewish communities worldwide. Investigations are ongoing to determine further details and motive.
